Fish is a staple in every Bengali household! Which part of the world you live doesnโ€™t change the scenario much, unless…๐Ÿ˜ˆ you are the only fish lover in the house๐Ÿ˜‘ the man in the house and the kid are not fans ๐Ÿ˜

So fish is made but not so frequently ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ But a simple dish also tastes absolutely delicious after a gap๐Ÿคค

So today I bring to you a fish curry that is quick to make and totally finger-licking! We Bengalis love to add potato in everything, you can decide accordingly. But, since this is a simple curry, I think potato does add body to it!

Fish curry ๐Ÿ›

  • Bar (bass) Fish (cleaned and cut into pieces) any type of fish can be used
  • 2 medium-sized potatoes (cut into wedges) optional
  • Small piece of ginger (finely chopped)
  • Turmeric powder
  • Red chili powder
  • Kashmiri red chili powder for colour
  • Coriander powder
  • Cumin powder
  • Yogurt
  • Oil for frying the fish pieces and cooking the curry
  • Salt to taste
  • Cumin seeds (whole)
  • Green chilies
  • Chopped fresh coriander for garnishing

Let’s get started

Clean and cut the fish into pieces. Sprinkle salt, turmeric powder, and little red chili powder, rub the fish pieces properly with the spices and let them rest for 10 minutes.

Pro tip: use your hand ๐Ÿ˜‰

Direction to cook:

Take enough oil in a deep pan for shallow frying the fish pieces. Once the oil is hot place them one by one carefully so as not to splash hot oil. Fry the pieces till crispy on one side, turn and repeat on the other side. Take them out on paper napkin when done.

In the same pan add oil if needed and add the potato pieces. Fry them till the potatoes starts to turn golden. Take them out and keep aside.

While the potatoes are getting cooked we will prepare the yogurt paste. In a bowl take plain yogurt, add turmeric powder, chopped ginger, coriander powder, cumin powder, both chili powders, green chilies cut into small pieces, salt and mix them all together till a homogeneous mixture is formed.

Yogurt and spices mix

Add more oil in the pan let it heat and add whole cumin seeds. When the seeds start to splatter, add in the yogurt mixture and keep cooking till the mixture starts leaving oil from the sides. Pour enough water to give the curry your desired consistency. And add in the fried potatoes as well. Cover and bring it to a boil. After it starts boiling lower the heat from high to medium and let it cook for 5-7minutes.

Let it boil

Now add the fried fish pieces carefully into the curry and boil for a few minutes. Don’t overcook it. Taste check for salt and switch off the flame. At this point, I like to add a pinch of sugar, that balances the flavors of all the spices and gives the curry a nice touch! Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves and we are ready to serve!!!

Serve it with hot rice๐Ÿคค
